Open House Held to Match Students to Mentors for Scholarly Projects

As part of the reform of the HMS curriculum, emphasis has been placed on engaging students in direct scholarly activities that may include bench research, clinical research, research in social medicine and global health, or an in-depth analysis of a topic related to medicine or health care delivery. At present about two thirds of HMS students are involved in research or scholarly activities, but for the class entering in the summer of 2010, involvement in a scholarly activity will be a graduation requirement. Students are involved in such scholarly pursuits during the summer between first and second year, after the Principal Clinical Experience, and during the fourth year; in addition, a substantial number take a fifth year to pursue research and other scholarly projects.

In order to help students find appropriate mentors, the Medical School is hosting an open house for the first-year class on October 14 from 4:30–6:30 pm in the TMEC atrium. Department representatives who can tell students about the work going on in their departments and who can address student questions will host informational tables. These representatives may also provide information on other investigators and scholars in the School’s departments and institutions who are interested in engaging medical students. The new Catalyst website (http://catalyst.harvard.edu) may also facilitate matching students to faculty mentors.
