Video Shows Birth of Platelets in Vivo
The complex process by which platelets are produced is less understood than that of other blood cells, yet problems in platelet production have a role in atherosclerosis, acute coronary events, and bleeding disorders. A collaboration between Ramesh Shivdasani (left) and Uli von Andrian offers the first view of platelet formation in living animals. With movies that show large megakaryocytes releasing platelets into the bloodstream, the study offers a definitive look at how platelets form.

Resident Work Hours: The Debate Won’t Rest
In 2003, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education limited resident duty time to 80 hours per week. It was a radical move, says Joseph Ladapo, in light of the 100-plus hours many house staff were used to working. Ever since, the medical community has been locked in debate over the effect of the new rules on patient safety, medical education, and health care costs.
