Molecular Regulator Found for Iron Balance, Immune Response
The protein produced by a newly discovered gene has emerged in mice as a key regulator of the distinct critical systems for iron balance and immunity. Nancy Andrews and colleagues at HMS and other institutions used a variety of genetic approaches to reveal that the gene, Mon1a, which also exists in humans, is essential for the secretion of a variety of molecules from cells. Reported in the August Nature Genetics, the findings suggest that the Mon1a protein is a commonly shared component of the secretory machinery.

Risk Genes for Multiple Sclerosis Uncovered
A large-scale genomic study has uncovered new genetic variations associated with multiple sclerosis, findings that suggest a possible link between MS and other autoimmune diseases. The study, led by an international consortium of scientists including David Hafler, is the first comprehensive study of the disorder’s genetic basis. The findings appear in the July 29 online edition of The New England Journal of Medicine.
