Risks
Evaluated for Heart Implants
In an increasingly common dilemma in modern medicine, physicians must grapple
with newly discovered risks that emerge after medical products have been declared
safe and effective and are in widespread use. William Maisel, a cardiologist
who specializes in arrhythmia, led two studies that provide more information
about the risks and benefits of replacing potentially flawed pacemakers and implanted
defibrillators. For the vast majority of people, the benefits still trump the
risks by a wide margin. The results only apply to the small group of patients
with devices that are affected by a recall or advisory.
