Gold
Shows Mettle Against Rheumatoid Arthritis
Gold therapy, once a common treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, fell out of favor
in part because no one could figure out how it quells inflammation. Brian DeDecker
(pictured), Stephen De Wall, and their colleagues now report that gold, along
with other metals such as platinum, frees peptides from the grip of the MHC class
II proteins, essentially disarming the immune response. The discovery could lead
to a safer, more effective version of gold therapy, still in use in developing
countries.

Nanocourses Probing Fast-paced
Fields
The Integrative Developmental Biology initiative has launched a series of nanocourses—two-day,
in-depth programs on some of the most rapidly changing areas of developmental
biology. The format maximizes flexibility so the curriculum can respond to the
fast pace of discovery. The new courses are open to the Harvard Medical community.
