From Focus:
Molecular Networks Uncovered in Bacterial Infection, Nerve Cell Communication
Using RNA interference (RNAi), researchers across HMS and, indeed, around the world are conducting global analyses of genes and the molecules they produce to understand functional networks within cells. Among those using the method at HMS are Darren Higgins (left), Norbert Perrimon (right), and their colleagues, who teamed up for a genomewide RNAi study to see how two different species of bacteria infect Drosophila cells. Similarly, Joshua Kaplan and collaborators reported the first large-scale RNAi screen in neurons, revealing nearly 200 genes involved in transmission of signals across the synapse.

Outsider’s View Finds Flaws in American Medicine
Upon returning from a year in Peru, Tarayn Grizzard felt like an outsider on rotations. But she hopes that experience doesn’t completely fade away. The feeling might promote a healthy questioning of conventional medicine, especially when it dispenses very costly treatment.
