Tracings Reveal Sleep Patterns for Health and Disease
The electrocardiograph, one of more than a dozen devices routinely used to evaluate
sleep, may be able to do the job of all the other instruments. Researchers led
by Robert Thomas have applied electrocardiograph recordings to map the landscape
of sleep, and in doing so, they have shown that healthy people tend to have more
stable sleep, while unstable sleep predominates in disease.

Literature as Path Toward Understanding Illness
Studying literature as a complement to medical education is more than a nice

of the patient’s experience of disease, which is just as important in
treatment as understanding the disease process.
