Molecular Middleman Puts Thyroid Hormone in Developmental Signaling Pathway
The active form of thyroid hormone is regulated by a feedback mechanism so its level in the blood rarely fluctuates. Yet it can vary wildly within cells. Antonio Bianco and his colleagues have identified a molecule that helps regulate how much of the active hormone is produced in cells. They report that regulated activation of the hormone plays a role not just in homeostasis, but also in a critical developmental pathway.
