Screening Uncovers Compounds Against ALS
HMS researchers have made a discovery that could lead to therapies for inherited
forms of the muscle-crippling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s
disease. Using a computer method for matching molecules to specific targets,
Soumya Ray and colleagues found a set of virtual compounds that when tested in
lab dishes, prevented the telltale protein clumping seen in the disease. The
results reinforce the effectiveness of computer-based screening and suggest its
promise in identifying and refining ALS drugs.

Photo by Justin Knight Match Day Links One Third of Fourth-years to Internal Medicine Residencies
Alanna Morris and Dayle Whiteman (center left and right) open their envelopes
during Match Day, when fourth-years find out which hospital has selected
them for its residency program. Whiteman will train in emergency medicine
at the University of Chicago, while Morris will enter the internal medicine
residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Internal medicine was
the most popular specialty this year, drawing one third of the class. More
coverage and a photo gallery will appear next week.
