A new technology to synthesize DNA rapidly and inexpensively has been reported
by George Church and his colleagues. Because customizing DNA is common practice
in biology labs, the findings may lead to a transformation in biomedical research.

Red Book Grants List to Be Posted Next Week
The annual call for internal applications for invitational awards appears
online Feb. 14. Potential candidates—including postdoctoral fellows and
faculty members—must apply to HMS first, and only those selected may submit
proposals to specific grant programs.

School Celebrates Alvin Poussaint
A visiting lectureship fund has been established at HMS in Alvin Poussaint’s
name, and the first lecture and scientific sessions will be held on Saturday,
Feb. 12. The scientific program is free and open to the public.

Failing Elders Weigh Heavily on Reservation Families
On the Navajo reservation, the demands of life increase the burden of caring
for elders whose health is declining. Ellen Rothman sees many of these patients
and deals with the hardships their families endure.
