New Genomes Resources at the National Center for Biotechnology Information Presenter: David Lipman, Director, National Center for Biotechnology Information
Carl Walter Amphitheater David Lipman will discuss new genomes resources at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), where he serves as director. A division of the National Library of Medicine within the NIH, the NCBI was created by Congress in 1988 to do basic research in computational biology and to develop computational tools, databases, and information systems for molecular biology. In Lipman's research on computational tools, he developed widely used methods for searching biological sequence databases. His methods have been cited in papers that have used them to discover biological functions for unknown sequences and which have advanced the understanding of the molecular basis of human disease.
