Elisabeth Tomlinson, fourth-year student at HMS, was honored with the Hollis L. Albright, MD '31 award, at the Dean's Council dinner.

Tomlinson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a dual major in history and science, "one of the most difficult combinations at Harvard with a rich internal history of rigor," said moderator Daniel Federman, the senior dean for alumni relations and clinical teaching. At Harvard, she was president of Phillips-Brooks House, the umbrella for 70 student community organizations. After graduating, Tomlinson returned to her native North Carolina and for two years worked to put together a program for youth in her community.

Tomlinson said that she chose to pursue a residency in surgery "because it requires the same values I was taught since childhood." This echoes the words of Hollis Albright, said Federman. "Hollis Albright's name needed no additional luster, but your achievements have brought and burnished his image even further. We hope you will feel as proud to have his name associated with yours throughout your career."

Upon accepting the award, Tomlinson thanked "all of the educators I've encountered over the last four years in the Medical School who have been committed to teaching the art and science of medicine. It's been a very humbling experience."
