From Focus:
Cellular Stress Appears to Link Obesity, Diabetes
Inside fat and liver cells of overweight mice, Harvard researchers may have discovered a pivotal mechanism that turns extra pounds into insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Gkhan Hotamisligil and colleagues report that the cells appear to react to extra fat with a stress response, unleashing molecules that block insulin signaling. The findings suggest that the trouble begins in the endoplasmic reticulum, a membranous network that encloses the cell nucleus.
