A Mechanism Discovered for Antibody Deployment

Antibodies dispersed by B lymphocytes learn where and how to fight pathogens by genetic changes known as class switch recombination. Two studies from Frederick Alt's lab show the first steps in a crucial enzyme's genetic modification of the switch region, which customizes the end of the antibody gene and determines how the antibody will mount its defense. When the mechanism goes awry, it may contribute to some cancers.

A Quandary in Caring for Alcoholic Patients
Practicing in Arizona on the Navajo Reservation, Ellen Rothman frequently deals with alcoholic patients. Their patterns of alcohol abuse differ from those of patients at other sites where she has worked. Unfortunately, effective treatment is particularly elusive.
