Match Day
Match Day: A Rite of SpringWith spring comes Match Day, and March 20 found HMS fourth-years gathered outside the registrar's office anxiously waiting for the envelope that would tell them what residency program they matched to and where they would spend the next few years. Of the 165 fourth-years, 160 chose a clinical program, and of those 160, 88 (55 percent) will enter an internship at HMS. More than half of the graduates will remain in Massachusetts (56 percent) while 17 percent will go to California and 11 percent to New York City. The specialty that gained the most HMS graduates over last year was dermatology. The most popular specialties were internal medicine (26 percent), pediatrics (11 percent), radiology (10 percent), and dermatology (8 percent). Family practice, general surgery, and obstetrics/gynecology saw a decline in the number of students entering these specialties.
Kristin Ammon and Matthew Fei congratulate each other on their residency matches. Both matched at the University of California, San Francisco, where Ammon will be a resident in pediatrics and Fei in internal medicine.
Third-year student Colleen Sabatini (second from left) celebrates with friends Christine Chung, Sohail Tavazoie, and Babak Kalantari , all pleased with their matches.
An excited Glen Gaviola hugs Janet McLaren after finding out both will remain in Boston for their residencies.
