Focus: Researchers led by S. Ananth Karumanchi have identified a protein involved in preeclampsia, a common, life-threatening complication of pregnancy. No treatment exists except premature delivery; the condition is both the leading cause of maternal death worldwide and a major cause of infant mortality in developing countries. The findings shed light on the cause of the disease and suggest new strategies for early diagnosis and treatment.
