Focus: A team of researchers led by Lynda Chin has made a discovery that could help solve a longstanding question in cancer biology: how does a sunburn from a childhood day at the beach develop into melanoma decades later? The researchers report that the ultraviolet rays of the sun may target a specific molecular cascade inside the young skin cell, the Rb pathway, impairing its ability to keep cell proliferation in check.
