Findings Break Silence on Stem Cells in Inner Ear

Stefan Heller (left) and Huawei Li have isolated stem cells from the inner ear of adult mice. Experiments have shown that these cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of cell types, perhaps including inner ear hair cells. In humans, loss of these hair cells is irreversible and a major cause of deafness. The findings raise the possibility of regenerating the cells as a viable treatment for hearing loss.
