Compound Traces Brain Plaques in Real Time

Using a multiphoton microscope to peer into the brains of living mice, Brian Bacskai (left), Bradley Hyman, and colleagues have successfully imaged the labeling of amyloid plaques by a fluorescent dye called PIB; these plaques are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. The findings have paved the way for experimental PET imaging of PIB in human volunteers with the hope that this technology will facilitate the diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer's.
