Focus:
Resistance Mutation Pinpointed in Gleevec Patients

The discovery of a genetic mutation that makes some patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia resistant to the touted drug Gleevec may ultimately save these patients. The study by Richard Van Etten and colleagues also suggests that a combination therapy such as that against HIV, which targets multiple molecular targets, may be effective against this disease.

FUNC Adds Outreach to First-years' Repertoire
Now in its fourth year, the First-year Urban Neighborhood Campaign (FUNC) took place the week before the opening of school, enabling first-year students to volunteer at community service projects throughout Boston. This year's organizer were second-year students Walter Bethune (above) and Jack Casey.

Esther Landhuis reports on a project in Nepal in which HMS grad students and postdocs are helping Nepali physicians establish a medical school outside of Kathmandu. What the Nepalis needed most was instructors in basic science. Enter HMS.
