Science Illuminates Art
The visual system is based on two parallel pathways. The primitive pathway processes motion, spatial organization, and brightness. The other sees color but not contrast, and it is three times sharper than the primitive path. The dual nature of seeing, says Marge Livingstone, accounts for many striking artistic effects, like the pulsating objects of an Impressionist tableau.
