Science Illuminates Art

The visual system is based on two parallel pathways. The primitive pathway processes motion, spatial organization, and brightness. The other sees color but not contrast, and it is three times sharper than the primitive path. The dual nature of seeing, says Marge Livingstone, accounts for many striking artistic effects, like the pulsating objects of an Impressionist tableau.

'Topping Off' Ceremony Looks Toward Expanded Research
HMS dean Joseph Martin offered a toast on May 28 as the last steel beam was raised to complete the structure of the new research building that will anchor the North Quad. He pointed to the efficiency of the construction and the opportunity to expand research on both the North and South quads.

Where Have All the Surgeons Gone?
The proportion of medical students who choose a residency in general surgery has declined in recent years. Tarayn Grizzard says the reason may be that the grueling pace of the residency is scaring off some would-be surgeons.
