Gene Switch Bumps Up Bug's Drug Resistance

The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa can change its phenotype from a form that responds to antibiotics to one that is resistant. Eliana Drenkard (above) and Fred Ausubel have discovered the genetic switch that may effect this change. Their work is good news to cystic fibrosis patients, who often suffer serious--and sometimes deadly--P. aeruginosa infections.
