Myelin Cells Reveal Unexpected Genealogy

The cells that wrap nerves with myelin, speeding nerve impulses, seem to be related to motor neurons instead of the more humdrum astrocytes as was previously believed. Reported by Richard Lu, David Rowitch, Charles Stiles (clockwise from front), and colleagues, the findings alter these myelinating cells' family tree. In doing so, the results may help trace the origins of brain cancer, multiple sclerosis, and mental retardation.
