Focus:
Changes in Brain Shown with Learning

A study by Vadim Bolshakov and colleagues demonstrates physiological changes in the brain that were caused by learned fear. Whether a cause-and-effect relationship exists between learning and changes in the brain has been a central question in neuroscience. The findings give weight to the affirmative side of this debate and may also clarify new targets for anti-anxiety medications.

Gimbrone Gives Keynote at Soma Weiss
Michael Gimbrone (left), who was chair of the academic societies' committee on student research for 11 years, gave the keynote address at the April 18 Soma Weiss Day. It was the 62nd annual celebration of this event, which showcases student research. In his talk, Gimbrone, who is shown above with HMS dean Joseph Martin, probed the nature of vascular endothelium.

Drawing Lines Between Medicine and Public Health
After returning to the wards earlier this month from a year off earning an MPH, Vatsal Doshi noted some of the distinctions between medicine and public health. And he still wonders where the balance is for him between caring for populations or individuals.
