Unique Genes Found in the 7th Pandemic Cholera Strain
Using the completed Vibrio cholerae genome, John Mekalanos and colleagues identified 22 genes unique to the virulent El Tor strain that has spread from Asia to Africa and Latin America. These exceptional genes may give the bacteria an edge in conquering the human host, surviving the outside environment, or both.

Academy Inaugural Called 'Historic' The Academy at Harvard Medical School held an inaugural celebration to honor its 141 initial members, including the founders and those tapped in early February during the first selection period. Daniel Federman (left) delivered the keynote address, and Academy director George Thibault gave opening remarks, calling the creation of the Academy "a historic occasion," comparable to that of the New Pathway.
