Focus:
Death Protein May Cause Neural Tube Defects in Babies of Diabetic Mothers

The raised blood sugar of diabetes may result in the overactivity of p53, a tumor suppressor protein associated with programmed cell death. A recent study in mice by Mary Loeken and colleagues shows that the surprising effect of this excess activity may be increased neural tube defects in babies of diabetic mothers.
