Focus:
Unexpected Immune Pathway Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis

Research by Diane Mathis (above), Christophe Benoist, and colleagues shows that in a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis a surprising protein cascade contributes to joint destruction. The findings may help explain why a systemic immune reaction causes disease only locally in the joints.

Cell Veil Lifted on Actin Activity
Using a technique to highlight individual actin molecules, Naoki Watanabe (left) and Tim Mitchison have discovered that the protein aggregates into fibers throughout the cell's veil-like lamellipodium, a flat, projecting rim that circles the cell and is associated with cell movement. The team's report counters the popular conception that actin grows only at the leading edge.
