Focus: Though it is the leading cause of blindness in older Americans, age-related macular degeneration develops for reasons that remain unclear. A study by Ann Elsner and colleagues identifies a possible cause as impairment of the light-gathering capacity of the cones in the center of the retina. This loss seems to appear early in the disease, increasing the chances for timely diagnosis and intervention. |
