Focus:
Enzyme Implicated in Insulin Resistance

A study by Gürol Tuncman, Gökhan Hotamisligil (l to r), and colleagues identifies an inflammatory mechanism in a mouse model that helps drive the development of obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Central to their findings is the discovery of an enzyme in fat, muscle, and liver cells that appears crucial to the pathway for obesity-induced insulin resistance and, perhaps, obesity itself.

HMS Lends Hand to Landmark Mouse Genome Study
Researchers at HMS, particularly those at the Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics, directed by Raju Kucherlapati, contributed to the recent major report on the mouse genome. The center cloned small portions of the genome with great detail and accuracy and added their findings to the larger effort.

Scientific Sloppiness is Bad News for Translational Research
The scientific misconduct in the news recently in physics and other laboratories is especially threatening to research that brings findings from the bench to the bedside, says Jan Schmollinger. If the public loses trust in trial safeguards, regulations may increase and patient volunteers decline.
