Formin Gene May Explain a Common Cause of Female Infertility

In a study that sheds light on the leading cause of pregnancy loss in humans, Philip Leder, Benjamin Leader (l to r), and colleagues discovered that female mice without a particular formin gene had severely compromised fertility. Egg cells lacking the gene were unable to divide correctly, resulting in daughter cells with an abnormal number of chromosomes. This imbalance has been observed in humans to contribute to embryo loss and infertility.
