Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are among the fastest growing racial/ethnic populations in the U.S. and are often characterized as "model minorities" in health and socioeconomic status. Yet many of them face significant health disparities and barriers to health care. This presentation will provide an overview of the diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and their health issues. Recent public health and public policy initiatives that are expected to lead to health improvements in these populations also will be discussed.

Ignatius Bau is the deputy director for policy and programs at the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, a national advocacy organization seeking to improve the health and well-being of these people. Bau and the APIAHF led community efforts that successfully advocated for the creation of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 1999. He was the principal author of the January 2001 report from the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as part of the implementation of that White House initiative. Bau is a member of the California Department of Health Services Task Force on Multicultural Health and the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Public Advisory Group.
