Shadow Proteins in the Thymus Give Clues to Autoimmunity
A protein dubbed aire appears to help immune cells learn to recognize--and avoid attacking--tissues in all corners of the body. This function, identified by Diane Mathis, Christophe Benoiste (l to r), and colleagues, operates in the thymus, where aire seems to activate the production of a range of proteins usually found in the body's periphery. Immune cells therefore can become acquainted with these distant proteins. The findings give insight into the development of self-tolerance as well as what may go wrong in autoimmune diseases.

A Primary Dilemma for Underrepresented Minorities Tarayn Grizzard points out that some medical students who are members of underrepresented minority groups are in a bind. On the one hand, they feel pressure to go into primary care because an increase in minority practitioners may alleviate some of the health care disparities that minority patients face. On the other hand, specialties outside of primary care lack minority practitioners to serve as role models for upcoming minority medical students. She suggests that more minority students may need to gravitate away from primary care.
