Focus:
Cell Death in Eggs Traced to Smoking

A study led by Jonathan Tilly has revealed a genetic pathway that may be acted on by chemicals in cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants to trigger suicide in egg cells. The chemicals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, may thereby contribute to early menopause and infertility.
