Focus: By exposing self-destructive immune cells to the inflammatory agent tumor necrosis factor-alpha, Denise Faustman and her colleagues selectively eliminated the cells from non-obese diabetic mice, then regenerated insulin-producing islet cells. In doing so, the researchers effectively cured the mice of Type I diabetes. They are now gearing up for human trials. |
