Breathing New Life into Asthma Therapy
Researchers including Jeffrey Drazen (above) and Dan Tschumperlin suggest that asthma treatment might be improved by adding muscle relaxants to the steroids now commonly used. The proposal is based on their recent work showing that in an asthma attack, the force of smooth-muscle constriction on epithelial cells that line the lung airways may boost proteins that stiffen the cells and cause permanent scarring.

Learning Patient and Doctor Approaches to the Cancer Diagnosis In a role-playing exercise in the PatientDoctor II course, Erica Seiguer is a physician who diagnoses cancer in her patient. The patient role is played by a man who actually has cancer, who along with other patientteachers then critiques the students' performance. The message? Patients need to maintain control and doctors compassion.
