A study by Marc Vidal and colleagues on the nematode genome suggests that the tally of human genes announced by the international genome initiative may seriously understate the true number. The researchers' method involves using cDNA sequence tags, including those for stretches that may be transcribed only rarely, to confirm the relatively high count for worm genes predicted by a standard gene-counting application.
