Focus:
Slow Metabolism of Alcohol Linked to Lower Heart Risk

A recent study by Lisa Hines (above), David Hunter, and colleagues reveals the genetics behind the beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption. People who drink moderately and have a gene variant for slow metabolism of alcohol appear to have the greatest amount of high density lipoprotein in their blood and the lowest risk of heart disease.
