Focus:
Commoner in Brain Coronates Cortex

A team led by Christopher A. Walsh (above) and Edwin Monuki has identified a gene needed to form the cerebral cortex. They have also discovered, ironically, that regulation of the gene apparently is directed by one of the brain's humblest structures, the roof plate. So the roof plate has a role in creating the regal cortex.
