Focus:
Sickle Cell Disease Cured in Mouse Model

Using gene therapy, a team led by Philippe Leboulch has cured sickle cell disease in mice. Though the technique could not be used in humans because of the risks involved, the study is a promising proof of principle.

Milestone Celebrations: Nobel Anniversary, New Student Offices
The Department of Neurobiology held a Dec. 12 reception for David Hubel to mark the 20th anniversary of his winning the Nobel Prize in Medicine. A day later, a forward-looking open house introduced medical and dental students to the new offices for Student Affairs, Enrichment Programs, and Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs in the renovated Gordon Hall.
