A paper by Sanjay Magavi, Jeffrey Macklis (l to r), and colleagues demonstrates in mice that stem cells in the cerebral cortex can be induced to differentiate and grow into mature nerve cells. The finding flatly contradicts the received wisdom that the brain is incapable of healing itself, particularly in the region of the cortex. But much research remains to be done before clinical application can even be contemplated.
