Applying Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point to science, Alex Carter reassures grad students that the lab grind may very well have a happy ending, even though there's no end in sight. In any complex system, of science or society, just a ripple can produce a great wave of change if the moment is right. So try to understand the forces at work, Carter suggests, and, of course, keep your head above water.
