Genes or Environment: What Shapes the Brain's Body Map?

John Flanagan and colleagues have discovered that a certain gene can affect the developing cerebral cortex in mice, distorting their sensory brain map. This map represents the allocation of brain space to particular parts of the body for interacting with the outside world. It is the first time that this plot plan has been shown to be influenced by genetics rather than neural input from the body.
