Kinsey Caucus Lunchtime Film Series Presents:
A Film by Marlon Riggs
12:00 p.m. In commemoration of Black History Month, the Kinsey Caucus, the gay, lesbian, and bisexual student, faculty, and staff organization at HMS, presents documentary filmmaker and educator Marlon Riggs's Tongues Untied.Riggs graduated from Harvard University and received a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, where he began teaching in 1981. His first film Ethnic Notions (1986), which explored racial stereotypes in America, received an Emmy Award in 1988. His documentary on the representation of African Americans on television, Color Adjustment (1991), won a Peabody Award. Riggs died in 1994 from AIDS. Riggs used his films to combat racism and homophobia. This documentary combines poetry, personal testimony, rap, performance, and dance in this singular exploration of the racism and homophobia that black men face daily. When broadcast on the PBS series "POV," it generated outrage from right-wing politicians. |
