Focus:
Breast Cancer Protein Shown to Be Highly Tuned Molecular Machine

David Livingston (right), Ralph Scully (left), and their colleagues have completed the first study showing that the DNA-repair function of a cell with a mutant BRCA1 gene can be restored by introducing a healthy copy of the gene. The study also suggests that the BRCA1 protein must be completely intact to function normally. Otherwise breast or ovarian cancer may result.
