Focus:
Brain Found to Play Unexpected Role in Type II Diabetes

Findings by Ronald Kahn and colleagues show that insulin resistance in the brain could contribute to some of the key symptoms of Type II diabetes. Previously, the brain was not considered to play a leading role. The research calls into question the current theory of the disease and suggests treatment may need to be revised.

Dean Reviews the State of the School
Joseph Martin, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, presented his 2000 State of the School speech on Sept. 26. In it he shared a mission statement for HMS, four broad themes, and a seven-point to-do list for 2000-2001.
 

Staffers Take AIDS Ride to Support Fenway Center
On Sept. 15 to 17 some HMS staff members joined the Boston to New York AIDS Ride, pedaling the 275 miles to raise money for services and research at the Fenway Community Health Center and other programs.
